iPhone 16 Tops India’s Smartphone Sales in 2025, Signals Premium Shift

Apple’s iPhone 16 has emerged as India’s highest-selling smartphone of 2025, marking a major shift in consumer preferences in one of the world’s most price-sensitive markets. According to a Counterpoint Research report, Apple sold over 6.5 million units of the iPhone 16 in the first 11 months of the year, outperforming popular budget models such as Vivo’s Y29 5G, which sold 4.7 million units during the same period.

The strong performance is notable given the significant price gap between the iPhone 16 and competing mid-range devices. Analysts say the trend reflects a growing “premiumisation” of the Indian smartphone market, supported by easy EMI options, exchange offers, card discounts and cashbacks that have made high-end devices more accessible. The iPhone 15 also featured among the top five best-selling smartphones, reinforcing Apple’s growing appeal.

Counterpoint Research expects India’s smartphone shipments to reach around 158 million units in 2025, up from about 151–153 million units last year. Apple’s expanding footprint in India has also contributed to the surge, with increased local manufacturing to reduce reliance on China and the launch of new Apple retail stores in Bengaluru, Pune and Noida, further strengthening its presence in the country.
