IndiGo Suspends Six International Routes Amid Rising Costs and Airspace Restrictions
India’s IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, has announced the suspension of flights to six international destinations starting July 1. The affected routes include Hong Kong, Shanghai, Langkawi, Krabi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap. The airline cited rising operating costs, higher jet fuel prices, and ongoing airspace restrictions as key reasons behind the decision.
The disruption has been intensified by geopolitical tensions, including airspace closures linked to the Iran conflict and Pakistan’s continued ban on Indian carriers. These factors have led to longer flight paths and increased fuel consumption, further straining airline profitability. IndiGo recently reported a quarterly loss driven largely by elevated fuel costs and operational pressures.
Despite the route cuts, IndiGo stated it will continue operating over 1,800 international flights per week and may resume bookings for the suspended destinations from October 1, depending on conditions. Other Indian carriers, including Air India, have also reduced domestic and international operations due to similar cost and demand challenges.
