IndiGo Estimates Over ₹5 Billion Payout After Mass Flight Cancellations

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, on Friday estimated it would pay more than ₹5 billion ($55.19 million) in compensation to customers affected by widespread flight cancellations last week. The carrier had scrapped around 4,500 flights due to poor pilot roster planning, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded. Following the disruption, India’s civil aviation regulator directed IndiGo to cut 10% of its domestic winter schedule.

In a post on X, the budget airline said it is identifying flights on December 3, 4 and 5 where passengers were severely impacted or stranded at airports. IndiGo said compensation would be provided to customers whose flights were cancelled within 24 hours of departure, as well as to those who faced severe disruptions at select airports during the period.

The airline has faced criticism for failing to adequately plan for new pilot rest and duty time regulations, which resulted in grounded aircraft and significant travel disruption. Earlier this week, IndiGo also lowered its capacity and passenger unit revenue forecast for the third quarter, citing the reduced winter schedule imposed after the cancellations.
