India’s U.S. LPG Imports Hit Record High Amid Middle East Supply Disruptions
India’s imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States are expected to exceed 1 million metric tons in June, reaching a record high as New Delhi seeks alternative supplies amid disruptions in the Middle East. Before the Strait of Hormuz closure, India sourced nearly 90% of its LPG imports from Gulf producers, but supply concerns have accelerated purchases from the U.S.
To ensure uninterrupted cooking gas supplies, Indian refiners increased spot purchases from the U.S. despite higher premiums. LPG imports recovered from 696,000 tons in April to 1.15 million tons in May, while domestic measures such as boosting refinery output, prioritizing household LPG distribution, and expanding piped gas connections helped reduce consumption by 15–20%.
Industry sources estimate India will import around 1.1–1.2 million tons of U.S. LPG in June. Supplies from the UAE, Kuwait, and other traditional exporters are also gradually recovering as shipping conditions improve. The partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to ease supply pressures and help lower LPG prices in the coming months.
