India’s AI Boom Shifts to Applications Driving Revenue Growth
India’s artificial intelligence landscape is undergoing a major transformation, with applications—not core AI models—emerging as the primary drivers of revenue, according to a new SenseAI report. While global AI investments reached $800 billion in 2025, much of the funding is now flowing into practical use cases where AI is deployed, monetised, and integrated into real-world solutions rather than just improving model capabilities.
The report highlights that India has entered the “Application Phase” of AI, powered by three key trends: the rise of vertical AI tailored for sectors like healthcare and finance, the evolution of “wrapper” or compound AI systems combining multiple models, and cost-efficient scaling using existing technologies. India is also gaining traction across enterprise SaaS, consumer technology, and regional language AI, while Global Capability Centres are transitioning into innovation hubs.
With over 1,200 AI startups—more than 75% of the ecosystem—focused on applications, and over 80% of funding directed toward this layer, India is building a revenue-first, application-driven ecosystem. Around 60% of startups are generating early revenue, reflecting strong commercial traction. Although India is still early in competing globally in foundational model development, its large developer base and domain expertise position it strongly to lead in AI applications that solve real-world problems.
