India to Repatriate 500 Nationals Fleeing Myanmar Scam Centre Raid
India will send a special aircraft to Thailand to repatriate around 500 of its citizens who fled Myanmar following a military raid on the notorious KK Park cybercrime compound, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Wednesday. The Myanmar military’s crackdown on the scam centre near the Thai border town of Mae Sot last week prompted a mass exodus of foreign nationals seeking refuge in Thailand.
According to Thai authorities, more than 1,500 people from 28 countries are now being cared for in temporary shelters. Prime Minister Anutin said the Indian ambassador will coordinate with Thai immigration officials to expedite the verification process for Indian nationals before their return flight. “India has asked for cooperation from Thailand—they don’t want this to burden us,” Anutin noted, confirming that the repatriation flight will land directly in Mae Sot.
The KK Park compound, long infamous among international law enforcement agencies, is operated by Chinese criminal networks and protected by local militias allied with Myanmar’s military. The area, along with neighboring regions across Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, has emerged as a hub for large-scale online fraud since the pandemic, with the UN estimating billions of dollars generated through the trafficking and exploitation of workers trapped in such scam centres.
