India Seeks Applications for Remaining Raw Sugar Import Quota

India has invited applications from eligible sugar mills and refiners to allocate the remaining 202,550 metric tonnes of raw sugar under a duty-free import quota of 1 million tonnes approved by the government. The move comes ahead of the country’s festival season, when sugar demand typically rises.

The government had opened applications last month for duty-free imports of up to 1 million tonnes of raw sugar until October 31. So far, applications covering 797,450 tonnes have already been received and allocated, leaving the remaining quota available for eligible applicants.

The imports are aimed at supporting sugar availability ahead of the peak festival period, when consumption increases due to higher demand for traditional sweets. The latest government circular provides sugar millers and refiners an opportunity to access the remaining allocation.
