India Protests Trump’s Meeting with Pakistan Army Chief Amid Rising Diplomatic Tensions
India has lodged a private diplomatic protest with the United States following former President Donald Trump’s lunch meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at the White House. The meeting, held after a deadly Kashmir attack and brief military clash between India and Pakistan, has triggered concern in New Delhi over Washington’s increasing engagement with Islamabad. Senior Indian officials said the gesture sent the wrong message, particularly when cross-border terrorism remains a “red line” for India.
Indian authorities fear that any U.S. military assistance to Pakistan could be used against them in future conflicts, further straining U.S.-India relations. The Trump-Munir meeting — unprecedented in its nature, with the army chief received without civilian counterparts — was viewed by New Delhi as a slight, prompting calls from India’s top offices to U.S. officials expressing displeasure. Meanwhile, Trump’s claims of mediating nuclear de-escalation between India and Pakistan also drew criticism from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who clarified the ceasefire came through military dialogue, not American intervention.
In response to these developments and a slowing of trade negotiations, India has adopted a more assertive posture toward the U.S. and is reassessing its diplomatic equations with China as a strategic counterbalance. This includes relaxing investment restrictions on China and renewing diplomatic outreach, despite longstanding tensions. Experts say New Delhi is hedging against Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy, particularly as it watches potential shifts in U.S.-China relations that could further impact regional power dynamics.
