India Plans 1 Million-Ton Green Ammonia Supply Boost for Fertiliser Sector
India is seeking to increase domestic supplies of green ammonia to fertiliser manufacturers as part of efforts to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen energy security. The state-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) plans to offer an additional 1 million metric tons of locally produced green ammonia annually through tenders, according to SECI Managing Director Akash Tripathi.
The move follows agreements announced in March involving fertiliser companies and domestic suppliers, including ACME Cleantech and NTPC Green, for 724,000 tons of green ammonia. India’s fertiliser sector currently uses around 20 million tons of grey hydrogen annually, with supplies affected by disruptions linked to the Iran war. Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy, while grey hydrogen is typically made from natural gas or coal.
India aims to produce 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, backed by incentives of around $2.1 billion under its National Green Hydrogen Mission. The government says production costs have fallen to about ₹279 ($3) per kilogram from around $5 in 2023. SECI is also preparing tenders for green methanol aimed at the domestic market, which are expected to be issued within the next two months.
