India Investigates LG, Samsung Over Tariffs on OLED TV Parts
India is investigating LG Electronics and Samsung over the import duties paid on display components used in OLED televisions, according to sources cited by Reuters. Indian authorities reportedly argue that the 5% concessional tariff applies to older LCD and LED technologies, while OLED components should attract a 15% duty.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has questioned Samsung officials at its India headquarters, while LG has received written queries and submitted responses along with an unspecified voluntary deposit. Samsung said it was reviewing the matter and cooperating with authorities, while LG and the revenue agency did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
The investigation comes as industry groups seek a 5% tariff for OLED display parts, arguing that the existing rules increase manufacturing costs and disadvantage newer technologies. OLED TVs remain a relatively small segment of India’s television market, but LG and Samsung are major players in the country’s premium TV sector.
