India in Talks for Global Critical Minerals Deals
India is engaging with Brazil, Canada, France, and the Netherlands to explore, extract, process, and recycle critical minerals, with a focus on lithium and rare earths. The discussions also aim to secure access to advanced mineral-processing technologies, as India seeks to diversify supplies beyond China.
The initiative follows India’s January agreement with Germany and builds on existing pacts with Argentina, Australia, and Japan. Talks with Peru and Chile are also underway, highlighting India’s global push to secure key raw materials essential for its energy transition and industrial growth.
Mining experts note that developing viable mines takes years, with exploration alone often spanning five to seven years. India’s Ministry of Mines is leading the effort, and a formal agreement with Canada on critical minerals is expected during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s planned visit in early March.
