India Hosts Landmark Global AI Summit as Tech Giants Gather in New Delhi

India has brought together top global technology leaders and world policymakers in New Delhi for the first major artificial intelligence summit hosted in the developing world. The India AI Impact Summit features key figures including Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the summit’s theme focuses on using AI for “human-centric progress,” positioning India as a voice for developing nations in global AI governance.

The event comes as India emerges as a key AI investment destination. Tech giants including Google, Microsoft and Amazon have collectively committed $68 billion towards AI and cloud infrastructure in the country through 2030. While India has yet to build a frontier AI model to rival the U.S. or China, policymakers are prioritising large-scale AI deployment and “application-led innovation,” backed by strong domestic adoption that has made India OpenAI’s largest user market.

More than 250,000 delegates and over 300 exhibitors are expected at the summit, hosted at Bharat Mandapam. The high-profile gathering has triggered a surge in luxury hotel rates across Delhi and prompted logistical adjustments, including a circular from Supreme Court of India allowing virtual court appearances during the summit week. The event follows previous global AI meets in the UK, South Korea and France, but marks a significant shift by spotlighting the developing world.
