India Faces Power Outages as Severe Heatwave Drives Record Electricity Demand

An intense heatwave fueled by an El Niño weather pattern has pushed India’s electricity demand to an all-time high exceeding 270 gigawatts, triggering power cuts across various regions. The blistering summer temperatures have severely strained the national power grid, leading to a peak power deficit of approximately 2.57 gigawatts on Thursday evening, according to the national regulator Grid-India. In response to the crisis, the federal power ministry issued a statement on Friday urging citizens to use electricity wisely and judiciously as the country braces for even harsher conditions.

The power disruptions are heavily concentrated during the evening and night hours, ranging from 40 minutes to an hour in major hubs like Chennai, disrupting residents and remote workers. While daytime electricity demands are partially alleviated by solar power generation, evening supply relies heavily on thermal and hydropower sources, creating chronic shortages as hotter nights become the norm. Energy experts emphasize that the current crisis highlights an urgent need for India to fast-track the commissioning of battery storage systems to effectively utilize surplus daytime solar energy during the night.

The utility crisis is expected to worsen as weather authorities have forecast “heatwave to severe heatwave conditions” from Friday through May 27 across New Delhi, alongside massive stretches of northern and eastern India. Residents in the capital region, Noida, and the eastern coastal state of Odisha have already taken to social media and local platforms to protest against frequent day and night outages. The relentless heatwave is presenting a critical test for India’s power infrastructure as the country battles to keep the lights on amid soaring temperatures.
