India-EU FTA Boosts Hopes of Easier Schengen Visas for Indian Travellers
The India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is not just about trade and tariffs—it could also ease a long-standing pain point for Indian travellers: the Schengen visa process. At the 16th India-EU Summit held in New Delhi on January 27, 2026, both sides adopted the Joint India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda, which includes a push to modernise and simplify Schengen visa procedures through upcoming digital systems. While no firm timeline has been announced, the move signals reduced paperwork and smoother processing for Indian tourists, students, and business visitors.
If implemented as planned, streamlined Schengen procedures would allow easier access to 25 European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and others across Central and Eastern Europe. However, travellers should note that Cyprus and Ireland, though EU members, are not part of the Schengen Area and will continue to have separate visa requirements.
The proposed simplification will not mean relaxed scrutiny. The India-EU roadmap links digital visas with stronger checks against fraud and improved document verification. This comes amid tighter EU border rules approved in November 2025, allowing faster suspension of visa privileges if irregular migration indicators rise sharply. The message is clear: quicker processing, but with stricter compliance.
