IMF Applauds India’s Announcement at COP26 to Achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2070

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) applauded India’s announcement at the recently concluded COP26 session in Glasgow about addressing climate change concerns.

At a press conference, Gerry Rice, Director, IMF Communication Department, said, “We welcome India’s declaration at the COP26 of new targets to expand reliance on renewables and lower the carbon intensity of its economy, including to adopt a net-zero aim by 2070.” “As you may be aware, India is currently one of the world’s major emitters, and its electricity generation is still highly dependant on coal.

As a result, its actions may serve as a catalyst for action in other emerging market countries “he stated. Rice responded to a question by saying, “India’s strong investment in renewables and climate change adaptation policies imply it is well-positioned to take further efforts to attain this new target.”
