Husband gets ten years in prison for Kerala student’s dowry death

Vismaya, a medical student who hanged herself at her home in Kerala’s Kollam district last year, had her husband sentenced to ten years in prison for dowry death today.

Kumar was also fined Rs. 12.55 lakh by the court, of which Rs. 2 lakh will be paid to Vismaya’s parents. He was found guilty of dowry death, abetment of suicide, and dowry-related harassment by the court yesterday. On June 21, 2021, Vismaya, 22, was discovered dead at her home in Sasthamkotta, Kollam district.

Vismaya’s husband got sentenced to ten years in prison today for dowry death.

The court also fined Kumar Rs. 12.55 lakh, of which Rs. 2 lakh will go to Vismaya’s parents.

The court found Kumar guilty of dowry death, suicide abetment, and dowry-related harassment yesterday. Vismaya, 22, was discovered dead at her home in Sasthamkotta, Kollam district, on June 21, 2021. “Kumar, on the other hand, did not like the car and demanded a cash payment of ten lakh rupees. He began torturing her after we told him it wasn’t possible”, Vismaya’s father had made a claim.
