Helicopter carrying Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat crashed in Ooty

A helicopter carrying top military officials to Ooty crashed in Coonoor. According to preliminary information, the helicopter that took off from Sulur air base crashed between Ooty and Coonoor in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. It is learned that in IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces, and his family were in the helicopter.

It is not clear who the top officials on board the helicopter were or how many were on board. A fourth person has been admitted to hospital with serious injuries. According to some media reports, the helicopter was carrying a prominent military official of the country, but the military has not yet commented on the matter.

News agencies now report that there were 14 people on board the helicopter and that four bodies have been recovered. Six military personnel were on board the helicopter.
