Government Completes Mother Tongue Survey Of 576 Languages In India

A nationwide mother tongue survey of 576 languages and dialects by the Ministry of Home Affairs has been successfully completed.
In order to conserve and analyse the original flavour of each indigenous mother tongue, it has been proposed to establish a web archive at the National Informatics Centre (NIC), according to the home ministry’s annual report for 2021–2022.

It stated that internal linguists are currently revising and organising the linguistic data properly for this purpose.

“The Mother Tongue Survey of India (MTSI) project is successfully completed with field videography of 576 mother tongues,” the report said.

The Linguistic Survey of India (LSI) has been a regular research endeavour in India since the implementation of the 6th Five Year Plan, according to the home ministry.

The volume on LSI Jharkhand is finished, and the volume on LSI Himachal Pradesh is almost finished, continuing past releases under this initiative. LSI Tamil Nadu and LSI Uttar Pradesh are currently doing fieldwork.

According to the study, mother languages’ videotaped speech data will be transferred to the NIC server for archival purposes. The home ministry stated that various new efforts, including the use of cutting-edge geospatial technology, have been implemented to facilitate the seamless conduct of the mega exercise in the next census, which has been delayed because to the COVID-19 epidemic.

To guarantee accurate coverage of the whole geographical region of the country, pre-census mapping efforts include the creation and updating of maps displaying administrative units of the states and UTs, districts, sub-districts, villages, towns, and wards within towns. Additionally, there are efforts being undertaken to disseminate Census results using web-based interactive maps. Work has already been started in this direction as preparation.
