“Friend In Need Is Friend Indeed”: Earthquake-Hit Turkey Thanks India

Turkey’s ambassador to India, Firat Sunel, hailed New Delhi and referred to it as “Dost” for its kindness in helping the country after three terrible earthquakes devastated Turkey in the space of 24 hours. He said, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
Taking to Twitter, Mr Sunel said, “Dost” is a common word in Turkish and Hindi… We have a Turkish proverb: “Dost kara gunde belli olur” (a friend in need is a friend indeed). Thank you very much India.”

Earlier, V Muraleedharan, the Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, paid a condolence visit to the Turkish embassy. He also expressed the sympathy and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the humanitarian cause. Indian rescue and medical personnel have been sent to Turkey.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), a meeting was conducted where it was decided that the NDRF’s search and rescue teams, medical teams, and relief supplies would be sent out right away in collaboration with the Turkish government.

Two teams of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), each with 100 members, are prepared to be flown to the earthquake-affected area for search and rescue operations, according to a statement from the PMO. These teams will include specially trained dog squads as well as the necessary equipment.

A meeting was held in South Block by PK Mishra, the prime minister’s principal secretary, to explore quick relief measures.
The Cabinet Secretary, officials of the Ministries of Home Affairs, Civil Aviation (MoCA), Health and Family Welfare, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), NDRF, Defense forces, and the External Affairs Ministry (MEA) also attended the meeting (MoHFW).

The region was shaken by one of the biggest earthquakes to hit Turkey in more than a century, which also brought down houses and led residents to run onto the streets.

In Turkey, there have been 24 aftershocks, according to the USGS. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, which was cited by the Times of Israel, effects of the earthquake were felt as far away as Romania, Georgia, and Egypt as well as Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, Greece, Jordan, and Iraq.

After news of the significant earthquake that struck Turkey and claimed many lives, condolences came in from all around the world. The day before, Prime Minister Modi expressed his sorrow for the deaths in Turkey and the surrounding territories on Twitter.
