“Fed Up With Air India”: PM’s Economic Advisory Council Chairman

Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), Bibek Debroy, lamented on Twitter on Friday that Tata-owned Air India’s services were “better before privatisation”

He expressed his frustration with Air India in a string of tweets following the delay of flight AI 687 from Mumbai to Delhi. In response to one of the tweets, Air India stated that the delay was caused by operational issues.

“Fed up with Air India. Booked on AI 687 to Delhi. Scheduled time of departure 16.35. ETD keeps changing. Now 19.00. No information even now. It was better before privatisation…,” he said.

Additionally, Mr. Debroy stated that he has made the conscious decision that, given the option, he will never fly with Air India in the near future.

However, Mr. Debroy noted that simply ordering more aircraft does not guarantee better service.

In a tweet in response to Mr. Debroy, Air India stated that the flight’s delay was due to operational issues and that it would depart at 00:00. Please be assured that our crew is making every effort to help every passenger. Mr. Debroy retorted that the team was not helping any passengers. Last Thursday, Air India, which the Tata Group purchased in January 2022, made an order for 470 aircraft with a further 370 aircraft available for purchase.
