EV Sales Surge 76% in 2025 as Hybrid Cars Outpace Growth with 83% Jump
Electric vehicle (EV) sales in India surged 76% year-on-year to 175,256 units in 2025, driven by aggressive product launches and wider consumer adoption. However, strong hybrid cars outperformed EVs in growth terms, recording an 83% rise to 107,196 units during the year, despite having only eight models on sale compared to more than 40 EV options available in the market.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor continued to dominate the strong hybrid segment, commanding over 80% market share through models such as the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Camry, and Vellfire. Toyota’s hybrid sales rose 78% to 87,241 units in 2025. Maruti Suzuki more than doubled its hybrid sales to 18,958 units, while Honda sold 997 units of its City Hybrid sedan during the year.
In the EV space, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles retained its leadership position with 69,236 units sold, up 12.5% from 2024. JSW MG Motor India narrowed the gap sharply with sales of 51,172 units, led by the MG Windsor, India’s top-selling EV in 2025. Mahindra & Mahindra ranked third with 33,335 EV registrations, clocking a massive 369% growth and leading the segment in revenue terms. Hyundai, BYD, BMW, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Citroen, VinFast, and Tesla followed, with Tesla selling 223 EVs after its India entry, impacting premium and luxury EV sales.
