Diet Coke Gets Costlier in India Amid Supply Crunch
Diet Coke prices in India have increased by more than 10% after supply chain disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran conflict led to a shortage of aluminium cans. Since Diet Coke is sold mainly in cans in India, Coca-Cola has been forced to import larger and more expensive 330-ml cans from Southeast Asia, replacing the popular 300-ml variant in many markets.
The disruption is linked to shipping challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, a key trade route for aluminium cans and raw materials. The new 330-ml can is now priced at ₹50, compared with ₹40 for the earlier 300-ml version, resulting in a significant increase in the per-millilitre cost. In some locations, Coca-Cola has also introduced limited quantities of 200-ml glass bottles to help meet demand.
India remains a key growth market for Coca-Cola, and while supplies of Diet Coke have been affected, Coke Zero continues to be widely available as it is sold in both bottles and cans. The shortage has also fueled consumer interest, with some pubs and social media influencers even hosting themed Diet Coke parties that attracted health-conscious customers despite higher prices.
