“Didn’t Know Modi Government Was So…”: P Chidambaram’s Swipe At George Soros Row

Senior Congressman P. Chidambaram responded to billionaire investor George Soros’ criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and inquiries over Hindenburg Research’s report on businessman Gautam Adani by saying that he disagrees with most of what Soros has stated in the past and currently.

Mr Chidambaram tweeted, “I did not agree with most of what George Soros had said in the past, and I do not agree with most of what he says now. But to label his remarks as an “attempt to topple the democratically elected government in India” is a puerile statement.”

During the Munich Security Conference on Thursday, Mr. Soros stated that the stock crash of business billionaire and alleged close associate Gautam Adani will weaken Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “opening the path” to a democratic renaissance in the nation.

The leader said in a series of tweets sent on Saturday from his official account that the Indian people would decide who would serve in and who would leave the country’s government. He also said, “I did not know that the Modi government was so feeble that it could be toppled by the stray statement of a 92-year-old rich foreign national.”

In another tweet, he advised to “ignore George Soros and listen to Nouriel Roubini.” According to Mr Chidambaram’s tweet, Roubini warned that India is “increasingly driven by large private conglomerates that can potentially hamper competition and kill new entrants”.

The CEO of Roubini Macro Associates, a New York-based worldwide macroeconomic consulting firm, is Nouriel Roubini. According to nourielroubini.com, he is also the co-founder of Rosa and Roubini Associates and the head economist for Atlas Capital Team LP. Mr. Roubini warned of the impending recession because of the credit and housing markets in a 2006 speech to the International Monetary Fund.

At a speech on Thursday, the 92-year-old billionaire philanthropist noted that PM Modi had been “quiet” on the subject and stated that PM Modi will “had to answer questions” from foreign investors and Parliament over claims of fraud and stock manipulation at Mr. Adani’s industrial empire. Mr. Soros’ comments were denounced by the BJP yesterday, which described them as a “vow to destroy India’s democratic processes.”
