Delhi Rolls Out Heat Wave Action Plan 2026
Delhi has launched a comprehensive Heat Wave Action Plan 2026 as temperatures are expected to cross 40°C for prolonged periods again this summer. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the plan as more scientific and robust, with satellite mapping used to identify high-risk heat zones and vulnerable populations. Measures include cool roof initiatives, misting systems at bus stops, and targeted interventions in thermal hotspots across the city.
The plan prioritizes protection for children and outdoor workers. Schoolchildren may receive ORS before leaving school to prevent dehydration, while construction workers could be required to pause work between 12 pm and 3 pm. Worksites will be equipped with drinking water, sun protection gear, and first-aid support. Additionally, hospitals and health centres are on alert, with dedicated cooling rooms and emergency response teams deployed.
Infrastructure and environmental measures are also central to the plan. Reflective coatings are being applied to buildings, anti-smog guns and misting systems will help reduce urban heat, and water points are being installed for animals and birds. Authorities have also warned of rising electricity demand, which may exceed 9,000 MW, stressing that power disruptions—especially in critical services—must be avoided.
