Delhi Court Upholds Temporary Telegram Ban Over Exam Leak Concerns
A Delhi High Court has upheld the Indian government’s temporary ban on Telegram, ruling that authorities acted legally and reasonably to protect the integrity of a major medical entrance examination. The messaging platform remains blocked from June 16 to June 22 following allegations that leaked exam papers were being circulated through the app.
The decision has sparked debate among free speech advocates, who argue that the move sets a concerning precedent for government intervention in digital communication platforms. The government maintained that Telegram posed unique enforcement challenges due to features that allow users and channels to remain anonymous or quickly reappear after being blocked.
Telegram, which has more than 150 million users in India, argued that the ban was disproportionate and highlighted its efforts to remove unlawful content, including hundreds of exam-related links. The case has become one of the most significant legal confrontations between a global technology platform and the Indian government, raising broader questions about online regulation and digital rights.
