Cyclone Asani: Rain and strong winds to be expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Rain and strong winds brought by Cyclone Asani disrupted normal life in parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday, officials said. As the year’s first cyclonic storm approaches the archipelago, inter-island shipping services have been halted, and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea, they said.

As a precaution, officials said, around 100 members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed and six relief camps have been established in various parts of the islands. Rain and strong winds hit the North and Middle Andamans, but life in Port Blair went on as usual, they said.

“At 05:30 IST today, March 20th, 2022, yesterday’s well-marked low pressure area intensified into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea. During the next 24 hours, to worsen into a Deep Depression, “In a tweet on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The system is expected to move closer to the coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
