China Covid Surges, Vaccine Maker Adar Poonawalla says “Needn’t Panic”

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), expressed concern over the mounting COVID-19 cases in neighbouring China but urged the public not to panic due to India’s “high immunisation coverage and track record.”

At the same time, he asked the populace to follow the rules established by the Indian government and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The CEO of Serum Institute of India, which produces the Covishield COVID-19 vaccine, is Adar Poonawalla.

“The news of rising COVID cases coming out of China is concerning, we need not panic given our excellent vaccination coverage and track record. We must continue to trust and follow the guidelines set by the Government of India and @MoHFW_INDIA,” tweeted Adar Poonawala.

Despite the official figure being about 2,000 per day, the Hong Kong Post claims that people in China are reporting innumerable occurrences of COVID-19 all around them.

Former Indian ambassador KP Fabian expressed worry on the spike of Covid-19 cases in China on Tuesday, saying that “over 60% of China and 10% of the entire population is going to be infected with Covid and millions may die.”

The Union Health Ministry ordered States and Union Territories to provide samples of all COVID-19 positive cases to INSACOG labs on Tuesday in order to track new variants, if any, in light of the recent rise in cases of COVID-19 in various nations. On Wednesday, prominent authorities and specialists will gather with Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the nation.
