CBI Files Chargesheet in Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case, Excludes Gang Rape Allegation
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet in the case involving the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, charging Sanjay Roy with murder and rape. Roy, a civic volunteer with the local police, allegedly committed the crime on August 9. However, the chargesheet excludes the earlier gang rape allegations, according to CBI sources.
The incident, which took place in the hospital’s seminar room during the victim’s break, sparked protests among junior doctors across West Bengal. On Monday, the hunger strike by junior doctors entered its third day, with six junior doctors already on fast-unto-death, demanding justice and workplace safety, while the state government remains unresponsive.
The Joint Platform of Doctors in West Bengal, along with senior members, is considering joining the protest in solidarity. The protesting doctors are calling for the removal of the health secretary and increased police protection in hospitals to prevent further incidents.
