Behind the Headlines: P. R. Somdev on Leading Karma News

P. R. Somdev, CEO of Karma News, leads the organization with a commitment to distinct and unbiased journalism focused on the common people. In this conversation, he will address Karma News’s unique approach, respond to criticisms, and share insights into the company’s future plans and its evolving role in the media industry.

a) Karma News often takes very distinct stances as a media entity, especially concerning ordinary people in Kerala. Is such an approach aimed at financial gains and increasing subscribers?

Ans: Absolutely not. The operational ideology raised by Karma News is deeply rooted in the concept of “Voice of the Common People,” which was formulated by the founder Mr. Vince Mathew. His idea has been implemented merely as the CEO. Observing how Karma News reports news by aligning with the public issues of ordinary people, beyond commercial interests and without succumbing to influences, clarifies this.

b) There is criticism that Karma News takes stances against certain religious communities in its news. How do you address this?

Ans: This is a completely incorrect statement. Karma News is not against any religion or political party. We have consistently reported on the acts of terrorism conducted in the name of religions factually and without bias, and will continue to do so.

c) Can you deny that Karma News has made efforts through its news to promote Hinduism in Kerala?

Ans: Karma News’s open stance is to report honestly on national and the unique cultural renaissance activities of India. We have not shown any special consideration or interest towards any religion.

d) What has been the biggest crisis you have faced as CEO of Karma News?

Ans: A significant issue faced by me as CEO, and by all our colleagues, is the resistance faced from authorities in terms of media freedom when reporting news truthfully. The decision has been to move forward despite these challenges.

e) What future plans do you have as an online media entity in Kerala?

Ans: Karma News is undoubtedly in the leading position among online media. Our future plans involve expanding our popular activities in Kerala and other states with a satellite profile. We will soon announce Karma News Satellite TV in Kerala. An entertainment-related OTT platform is also among our upcoming projects.

f) How do you view the changes brought about by new media in the media industry?

Ans: The growth of social media is indeed impressive. If new media operates with the discipline followed in traditional media, it will lead to significant social engineering. The notion that new media has replaced professional journalism is incorrect. New media is contributing to new approaches but not replacing professional journalism.

g) Have celebrity journalism and new media institutions become mandatory standards in the mainstream media in Kerala?

Ans: The introduction of advanced technologies and the rise of new media have led to changes in media approaches. However, the idea of “celebrity journalism” is a myth and not a mandatory standard.

h) Can you elaborate on the working culture at Karma News compared to other media organizations?

Ans: Beyond educational qualifications, Karma News’s HR system emphasizes analyzing an individual’s character. We prioritize passion for the job, basic knowledge about the job, professionalism, and suitable character. We do not adhere to age or educational qualifications as criteria for selection. Our noteworthy HR initiatives include social associate schemes for part-time freelance journalism and business associate schemes for freelance opportunities in media business & marketing. Unlike other companies, we focus on employees’ needs and productivity in our unique style.

i) As CEO of Karma News, can you summarize the company’s vision?

Ans: In the next five years, Karma News aims to become the largest employment provider and media entity with representation in various languages and regions in India. In the coming two years, we will establish a strong presence in the OTT sector. We plan to set up the Karma School of Media, Journalism & Business. The CSR fund will be utilized for the education of underprivileged children.
