Bangladeshi Court Issues Arrest Warrant Against Former PM Sheikh Hasina for Alleged Crimes Against Humanity
A Bangladeshi court has issued an arrest warrant for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others for alleged crimes against humanity during the recent mass student movement. The International Crimes Tribunal, chaired by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, responded to two petitions from the prosecution, ordering authorities to arrest the individuals and produce them by November 18. Hasina fled to India in August after being ousted from power during nationwide protests.
Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam stated that Hasina and other Awami League leaders were involved in massacres and killings from July to August. Former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Hasan Mahmud, and Anisul Huq are implicated. Over 60 complaints of crimes against humanity and genocide have been filed against Hasina and her party members.
The tribunal was reconstituted on October 14 under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, who appointed Justice Mortuza as chairman. The violent protests, triggered by discontent over a controversial job quota system, have left over 600 people dead, with more than 230 deaths following the fall of Hasina’s government.
