Bangladesh Seeks Better Environment for India Visit Amid Diplomatic Rift

Bangladesh has indicated that a more favourable diplomatic environment is needed before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman can make a high-level visit to India, as tensions between the neighbouring countries remain unresolved.

The two countries have been discussing a possible visit aimed at improving relations, which deteriorated sharply after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India in 2024 following a student-led uprising. Bangladesh is also pressing India to respond to its request for Hasina’s extradition.

Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025 over allegations linked to a deadly crackdown, which she has rejected as politically motivated. Bangladesh also criticised her recent public remarks calling for the lifting of the ban on her Awami League party, describing them as an affront to the country’s sovereignty.
