Axis Bank to Invest ₹15 Billion in Axis Finance, Strengthening Consumer Lending Arm
Axis Bank has announced plans to invest ₹15 billion (approximately $162.28 million) into its consumer lending subsidiary, Axis Finance, reinforcing its position in India’s growing retail credit market. The investment will be carried out in one or more tranches and is expected to be completed by March 2027. This move underscores the bank’s long-term commitment to expanding its non-bank lending operations and boosting its consumer finance portfolio.
The decision follows recent regulatory changes by the Reserve Bank of India, which eased rules on overlapping activities between banks and their subsidiaries. Earlier, stricter regulations had prompted major lenders, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, to consider merging or divesting their non-bank lending units. With the revised framework allowing ring-fencing of such operations, Axis Bank is now re-evaluating its earlier stance on a potential stake sale in Axis Finance.
Axis Finance, a registered non-bank financial company (NBFC), will present a revised growth strategy to the bank’s board in April and reassess its capital requirements accordingly. As of March 31, 2025, the subsidiary reported assets under management of ₹415.83 billion. Axis Bank has already invested ₹23.75 billion in Axis Finance over the past decade, and the fresh capital infusion is expected to further accelerate its expansion in the competitive consumer lending space.
