Amazon to Lay Off 30,000 Corporate Employees in Biggest Job Cut Since 2022
Amazon is preparing to slash around 30,000 corporate positions worldwide, marking its largest job cut since late 2022, when the company eliminated about 27,000 roles. The decision comes as part of a major cost-cutting initiative aimed at recalibrating operations after pandemic-era over-hiring. While the planned layoffs account for a small portion of Amazon’s 1.55 million global workforce, they represent nearly 10% of its 3.5 lakh corporate employees, underscoring a strategic shift from rapid expansion to sustainable profitability amid global economic headwinds.
According to reports, Amazon’s human resources division—known internally as the People eXperience and Technology (PXT) team—will be among the hardest hit, with additional cuts expected across its consumer business units. The company has declined to comment on the reports, but Reuters revealed that managers in affected teams were instructed to undergo communication training ahead of employee notifications, expected to roll out via email. CEO Andy Jassy, who also led the company through its historic 2022–2023 layoffs, is said to be doubling down on efficiency and AI-driven transformation.
Jassy has emphasized integrating artificial intelligence to streamline operations and enhance productivity, warning employees earlier this year that widespread AI adoption could reduce the need for large corporate teams. Since taking over from Jeff Bezos in 2021, Jassy has earned a reputation as a cost-conscious reformer, pushing for “unregretted attrition” and leaner organizational structures. With this latest move, Amazon joins other Big Tech giants like Meta and Google in recalibrating their workforce to align with AI-powered efficiency and a changing economic landscape.
