AirTrunk Commits $30 Billion to Expand India Data Centres
Australian data centre operator AirTrunk has announced plans to invest $30 billion in India by 2030, aiming to build 5 gigawatts of new data centre capacity across the country. The company, backed by Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, entered the Indian market earlier this year through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra and is now accelerating its expansion strategy.
AirTrunk’s existing development pipeline includes around 600 megawatts of projects in Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad, but the latest investment will significantly expand its footprint. Chief Executive Robin Khuda, after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said India has emerged as one of the company’s most important long-term investment destinations due to its growing digital economy and strong demand for AI infrastructure.
The investment comes as India positions itself as a global hub for artificial intelligence and data infrastructure through incentives for foreign investors and rapid digital growth. Major Indian conglomerates are also increasing spending in the sector, with Reliance and Adani committing billions of dollars toward AI, cloud computing and data centre development, highlighting the country’s rising importance in the global technology race.
