AI Reshapes India’s IT Services Industry
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing India’s $315-billion IT services industry, pushing major outsourcing companies to rethink how they price and structure contracts. Firms such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Cognizant are increasingly shifting from traditional billable-hour models to contracts tied to measurable business outcomes. Clients are demanding lower costs, faster delivery and higher productivity, while some are also bringing AI-driven tasks in-house.
The changing landscape is also giving mid-sized IT companies a stronger opportunity to compete. With AI reducing the advantage once provided by massive employee bases, smaller firms can win contracts through faster deployment, flexible pricing and specialised expertise. Persistent Systems and Coforge have recorded stronger growth than several larger rivals, highlighting how AI is creating a more competitive market for Indian technology service providers.
However, growing pressure from clients is also creating risks for IT companies. Some firms are reportedly accepting aggressive pricing and ambitious productivity targets to secure contracts, while others are walking away from deals that are no longer economically viable. As AI reduces the need for traditional entry-level coding work, India’s IT sector is also facing a broader shift in its hiring model, with companies expected to rely more on AI-enabled engineers and higher-value skills.
