Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab keeps its word on elections; Free electricity from next month

The Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab has kept its word in the run-up to the Assembly elections. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has announced that electricity will be provided free of cost from next month, as stated in the manifesto. He made this clear while presenting the state budget for the year 2022-23 in the Legislative Assembly. Cheema added that discussions have been held with all sections of the society before finalizing the budget.

20,384 suggestions were received through the portal. From July 1, all households will get 300 units of free electricity. A month after taking office, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had said that the promise to provide 300 units of free electricity to every household in Punjab would be implemented from next month. At present, Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, Below Poverty Line Families and Freedom Fighters are getting 200 units of electricity free of cost every month.

He said at the time that he would not increase electricity tariffs for industrial and commercial consumers and would continue to provide free electricity to farmers. One of the major promises made by the Aam Aadmi Party in the run-up to the Punjab Assembly elections was to provide up to 300 units of free electricity to every household.

Aam Aadmi Party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has lauded the Punjab government’s decision to provide 300 units of free electricity to all households in the state. He also said that unlike other political parties, they do not make false promises.
