PepsiCo Warns of Energy Drink Shortage in India as Label Ban Continues
PepsiCo has warned the Delhi High Court that its energy drink products could run out of stock across India within two months if a regulatory ban on the “energy drink” label continues. The company said it remains unable to manufacture products carrying the label, while rival Red Bull has received temporary relief from the regulator’s order.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directed manufacturers of high-caffeine beverages in June to stop using the term “energy drink”, citing concerns about potential health risks. PepsiCo, Monster and Reliance Consumer have so far been restricted to selling existing stocks bearing the label, while Red Bull secured court relief in September.
PepsiCo said relabelling its products would be a lengthy process, as packaging materials and cans have already been printed and purchased. Its popular Sting drink, launched in India in 2017 and priced at ₹20, has gained significant popularity, particularly among younger consumers and in rural areas. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 30, while the legal challenge to the ban remains unresolved.
