GST Council Set to Consider Next-Gen Process Reforms on October 7
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the next phase of process reforms under Next-Gen GST will be presented before the GST Council on October 7. The proposals are aimed at simplifying GST compliance and reducing operational costs, especially for small businesses.
Developed in consultation with state governments, the reforms are expected to streamline GST registration, return filing, refunds, dispute resolution and input tax credit processing. Sitharaman said the reforms are intended to provide taxpayers with greater clarity and certainty while making it easier for businesses to meet their tax obligations.
The announcement comes as GST continues to show strong growth following the rate rationalisation introduced in September 2025. Gross GST collections reached ₹12.46 lakh crore between April and September 2026, while active GST registrations rose to nearly 1.71 crore by the end of August, reflecting a growing taxpayer base and stronger compliance.
