India Needs Global Tech Forum to Engage Foreign Regulators: Sitharaman
India should create a dedicated forum to help technology companies engage with foreign governments and regulators in a coordinated way, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday. She said such a platform could help Indian firms address regulatory concerns before new rules create barriers to market entry.
With Indian technology companies expanding overseas, Sitharaman said startups cannot be expected to understand and negotiate different regulatory systems on their own. The need is growing as countries introduce new rules for emerging technologies such as agentic artificial intelligence and asset tokenisation.
The proposed forum could also support Indian companies in licensing and commercialising their technologies abroad, building partnerships and entering new markets. It could further promote interoperable standards and the sharing of best practices in areas such as data and cybersecurity.
