Indian Athletes Get Container-Style Accommodation Ahead of Asian Games

India is preparing its athletes for the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games by creating replicas of the container-style accommodation they will use in Japan. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has built the units at its Bengaluru campus to help athletes become familiar with the living arrangements ahead of the Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4.

The temporary wooden cabins are fully air-conditioned and measure 40 feet long and 10 feet wide. Each unit includes two twin bedrooms, two bathrooms, a small kitchen and a living area equipped with a television and music system. More than 17,000 athletes and officials have registered for the Games, where accommodation will include hotels, a cruise ship and temporary wooden units instead of a traditional athletes’ village.

SAI regional director Vishnu Sudhakaran said the replicas are intended to make the athletes’ experience in Japan more familiar. After the Asian Games, the Bengaluru cabins will reportedly be repurposed as additional guest rooms, giving the temporary facilities continued use beyond the sporting event.
