Freight Rates for Russia’s Urals Oil Shipments to India Drop as Tanker Availability Improves

Freight rates for transporting Russia’s Urals crude oil to India have declined in July as more oil tankers became available and seasonal demand eased, according to industry sources. The drop in shipping costs offers some relief to Russian oil exporters, who have been facing lower profit margins due to weaker demand for Urals crude in Asia and increased competition from other oil grades.

Shipping costs for an Aframax tanker carrying around 100,000 metric tons of crude from Russia’s Baltic port of Primorsk to India have fallen to approximately $7 million to $8 million, compared with $10 million to $11 million in June. Similarly, freight rates for larger Suezmax tankers transporting around 140,000 metric tons from the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk to India have dropped to about $10 million, down from nearly $15 million last month. Traders attribute the decline to improved vessel availability following a period of tight supply earlier this year.

Despite the recent fall in freight costs, market participants caution that rates could rise again if geopolitical tensions disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil trade routes. Earlier concerns surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict had pushed global tanker rates sharply higher. With Russia’s crude exports remaining near record levels, any fresh disruption in shipping could quickly increase demand for tankers and drive transportation costs upward once again.
