Tata Data Centre Fire Causes Major Data Loss, Recovery Challenges
A fire at a New Delhi data centre jointly operated by Tata Communications and Singapore-based ST Telemedia has caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, making data recovery difficult. According to a letter reviewed by Reuters, the severity of the blaze damaged parts of the facility and disrupted services despite business continuity measures being activated after the incident on June 5.
Several clients have reported significant losses. Matrix Cellular, a provider of international SIM services, said it may have lost access to more than 20 years of operational and customer data, while internet service provider R2 Net estimated losses of around $2 million due to service disruptions and client departures. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though authorities indicated it may have originated in lithium battery units.
The incident has also reportedly affected some Google Cloud services in India, leading to network disruptions and latency issues. ST Telemedia has commissioned an independent technical investigation, with findings expected within several weeks. The fire adds to a series of recent challenges for the Tata Group, including cybersecurity concerns at Tata Electronics.
