IndiGo Expands Market Lead as Air India Scales Back Flights
IndiGo strengthened its dominance in India’s aviation sector after Air India announced significant cuts to its domestic and international flight operations. According to the latest aviation industry data, IndiGo’s domestic passenger market share rose to 64.8% in April, gaining ground both year-on-year and month-on-month, while Air India Group’s share fell to 24.9%.
The shift comes as Air India reduces 22% of its domestic and 27% of its international flights between June and August to manage mounting financial losses and high fuel costs. Meanwhile, Akasa Air continued its steady growth, increasing its domestic market share to 5.7% and maintaining the industry’s highest load factor.
On international routes, IndiGo also regained momentum, boosting its passenger share to 47.5% as operational disruptions eased. Air India Group’s international share slipped to 46.6%, while overall international traffic remained under pressure due to geopolitical tensions and disruptions in West Asia. Despite softer demand, IndiGo improved its position as competitors scaled back capacity.
