Delhi Court Rejects Pernod Ricard’s Plea to Resume Liquor Sales
An Indian court has rejected a plea by Pernod Ricard seeking permission to resume liquor sales in New Delhi, dealing a major setback to the company in one of its key global markets. The ruling means Pernod’s products, including Absolut Vodka and Chivas Regal, will continue to remain off shelves in the capital.
The Delhi High Court backed city authorities, which argued that ongoing investigations against the company gave it a “criminal background” under local licensing rules. Authorities have accused Pernod of colluding with retailers during Delhi’s controversial liquor policy period, allegations the company has repeatedly denied.
Pernod argued that it has not been convicted in any case and should therefore be allowed to operate. The company can still challenge the verdict in a higher court. Alongside the licensing dispute, Pernod is also facing tax demands and scrutiny over imported Scotch whisky declarations in India.
