India’s Viral ‘Cockroach’ Group Amplifies Gen Z Anxiety
A newly formed social media movement called the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) has exploded across India, gaining nearly 15 million Instagram followers within days and surpassing the ruling BJP’s follower count. Founded by Abhijeet Dipke, the group uses humour and satire to spotlight youth concerns such as unemployment, inflation, education scandals, and political neglect. The name was inspired by controversial remarks from India’s Chief Justice comparing some unemployed youth to “cockroaches.”
The CJP describes itself as the “Voice of the Lazy and Unemployed” and has quickly resonated with India’s Gen Z population. Its posts discuss issues ranging from women’s political representation to the recent NEET medical entrance exam leak that impacted millions of students. Dipke says the movement aims to bring young people’s struggles back into mainstream political conversations, stressing that the group supports peaceful and democratic engagement.
The rise of the CJP reflects growing economic anxiety among India’s youth. A recent Deloitte survey found many Gen Z Indians are delaying major life decisions like buying homes due to financial insecurity and lack of jobs. With concerns also rising over artificial intelligence affecting entry-level employment, many young Indians see the movement as a symbol of resilience and frustration in a rapidly changing economy.
