MoD Signs ₹975 Crore Deal to Boost Mine-Clearing Capability of Army Tanks
The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹975 crore with two Indian firms to procure advanced trawl assembly systems for T-72 and T-90 tanks, strengthening the Indian Army’s mine-clearing and mobility capabilities. The contracts have been awarded to Bharat Earth Movers Limited and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd, according to an official statement.
The trawl assembly system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, is a critical minefield-breaching equipment designed to enhance operational effectiveness. It enables the creation of safe vehicle lanes through minefields, including those with anti-tank mines fitted with proximity magnetic fuses. The system is engineered to withstand direct blasts beneath it without endangering the tank or its crew, significantly improving battlefield survivability.
Out of the total contract value, EPHL has secured ₹385 crore for supplying 70 trawl assembly sets under the procurement programme. These systems will be deployed by the Armoured Corps for T-72 (Ajeya) and T-90 (Bhishma) tanks. The procurement falls under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category, reinforcing India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
