India Boosts Gulf Maritime Vigil

India has ramped up maritime surveillance in the Persian Gulf region as security risks escalate amid ongoing tensions. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said it is closely tracking developments and has activated precautionary measures to protect Indian-flagged vessels and seafarers. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a high-level review meeting, where officials assessed potential threats to Indian maritime assets and personnel operating in affected waters.

The Directorate General of Shipping has intensified monitoring across the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman and nearby sea lanes following reports of missile and drone activity, electronic interference and other security concerns. Authorities have begun real-time tracking of Indian-flagged ships, increased reporting frequency and set up 24×7 monitoring through the MMDAC DGComm Centre. Mandatory reporting rules have also been introduced for vessels, owners and managers.

The government is coordinating with the Indian Navy, Ministry of External Affairs, IFC-IOR, MRCC and Indian missions abroad to ensure swift response. Shipping firms and recruitment agencies have been advised to exercise caution in crew deployment and maintain regular contact with seafarers and their families. A dedicated Quick Response Team and helplines have been established to provide immediate assistance and strengthen inter-agency coordination.
