Delhi–Mumbai Air India Flight Returns Mid-Air After Engine Oil Pressure Failure
An Air India flight operating from Delhi to Mumbai was forced to return to its origin shortly after take-off in the early hours of Monday due to a critical technical alert. Flight AI887, a Boeing 777-337 ER, departed Indira Gandhi International Airport at around 3.20 am when cockpit systems indicated dangerously low oil pressure in the aircraft’s right-hand engine. The situation escalated quickly as the oil pressure reading dropped to zero, prompting the pilots to initiate emergency safety procedures.
The aircraft landed safely back in Delhi, and all passengers and crew disembarked without any injuries. Air India confirmed that the decision to return was taken strictly in line with standard operating procedures. The airline stated that the aircraft has been grounded for detailed technical inspections and will only resume service after receiving full clearance. Passengers were assisted on the ground and provided with alternative travel arrangements to Mumbai.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation acknowledged the incident and said it has sought a detailed report from Air India, while directing the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to conduct a thorough investigation. The episode comes close on the heels of another engine-related disruption involving an Air India Express flight earlier this month, renewing focus on aircraft maintenance and operational readiness during a busy travel period.
