Trump, Modi Signal Optimism on Reviving U.S.-India Trade Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration is resuming negotiations with India to address trade barriers and expressed confidence that a successful deal would soon be reached. Trump, in a social media post, noted he looked forward to speaking with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks, marking a shift in tone after weeks of strained diplomatic exchanges.
Prime Minister Modi responded positively, calling the U.S. and India “close friends and natural partners,” and said both sides were working to conclude trade talks quickly. The optimism from both leaders boosted Indian shares by more than 0.5%, signaling market confidence in the potential breakthrough.
The renewed engagement comes after tensions over tariffs, India’s oil imports from Russia, and a recent warming in ties between New Delhi and Beijing. While economists caution it is too early to assume a swift resolution, trade officials from both countries are expected to restart in-person talks in September, aiming to build momentum toward a long-awaited deal.
