Modi Embarks on Diplomatic Tour to Strengthen Ties with China, Japan, and Russia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a high-profile overseas visit on Thursday, aiming to bolster India’s diplomatic and economic partnerships with China, Japan, and Russia amid heightened trade tensions with the United States. With President Donald Trump’s escalating tariffs hitting Indian exports, New Delhi is seeking fresh collaborations to boost its “Make in India” initiative and expand resilience in global trade.

In Japan, Modi is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss deeper cooperation under the Quad alliance and push forward Japanese investments in India. Reports suggest Japanese firms may invest up to 10 trillion yen ($68 billion) over the next decade, with Suzuki Motor alone pledging around $8 billion. Both leaders are expected to explore joint ventures in critical minerals, high-value manufacturing, and advanced technologies, strengthening India’s role as a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

Following Japan, Modi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, where he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Talks will likely focus on easing bilateral tensions, resuming direct flights, reopening Himalayan border trade, and reducing barriers to Chinese investments in India. While the U.S. hopes India will counterbalance China, analysts say closer economic cooperation with Beijing could become a pragmatic necessity for New Delhi in the wake of Washington’s protectionist stance.
